Angelina Jolie Stars in A Might Heart

The film about the events surrounding the kidnapping and subsequent death of Daniel Pearl, A Might Heart, is fairly realistic and contains plenty of passion and strong moments. This is largely due to Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Marianne Pearl, Daniel's wife, and the main character of the film. She portrays Marianne as strong and smart, but obviously tormented emotionally considering the circumstances. Most importantly, Pearl seems to be in control of herself and in helping direct the efforts of others, from government to family, who attempt to resolve the situation.

The diverse supporting cast is strong. Archie Panjabi stands out in particular as Asra Q. Nomani, a close colleague of Marianne's offering not only emotional support but also insightful thoughts on practical solutions. Her role also sheds a bit of light on some of the tensions regarding race relations, specifically among Pakistanis and Indians.

The film does well in not being too political, polarizing, or too risky while tackling a risky subject. What is lacking, however, is a real connection to Daniel Pearl on a more personal level. Surprisingly, Futterman doesn't have many scenes as Pearl, and there could have been more scenes that show Marianne and Dan's lives together. In this respect, the film is slightly distant from Daniel Pearl in a personal sense. The film still works in showing the emotions and reactions to one of the highest-profile atrocities to have been committed in recent years, but one wonders if it is in spite of this.
